How Close Is the UK Electricity Grid to 100% Renewable Power?

The UK grid regularly exceeds 80–90% low-carbon generation during high-wind, high-solar periods, but has not yet sustained 100% renewable output continuously, as National Grid ESO (now operating as NESO, the National Energy System Operator) targets a fully zero-carbon-capable grid by 2030 under the Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.

What "100% Renewable" Actually Means on a Live Grid

Instantaneous renewable share and annual average renewable share are different metrics. On favourable days — high wind, sunny, mild demand — wind alone has supplied over 20GW, comfortably covering the majority of instantaneous UK demand. But the grid still relies on gas, nuclear, biomass, and interconnector imports to fill gaps during low-wind ("wind drought") periods, meaning the annual average clean power share sits meaningfully lower than peak instantaneous figures.

Key Milestones and Records

  1. Zero-carbon operability: NESO achieved the capability to operate the grid safely on 100% zero-carbon generation (wind, solar, nuclear, imports) for short periods, a target first met ahead of schedule in the mid-2020s.
  2. Wind generation records: Single-day and instantaneous wind output records have been broken repeatedly as North Sea offshore capacity has expanded, with combined onshore and offshore wind now the UK's single largest generation source on windy days.
  3. Carbon intensity lows: Grid carbon intensity — measured in gCO2/kWh — has hit record lows on the sunniest, windiest days, a small fraction of the levels recorded a decade ago when coal still featured heavily in the generation mix.
  4. Coal elimination: Coal-fired generation ended entirely on the GB grid in 2024, removing the single highest-carbon generation source from the mix permanently.

  1. Intermittency: Wind and solar output vary hour to hour; without sufficient long-duration storage, gas remains the practical backstop during extended calm, overcast periods.
  2. Grid connection queue: A large pipeline of renewable and storage projects awaits grid connection approval, a bottleneck NESO has been actively reforming to accelerate.
  3. Demand growth: Rising electricity demand from EV charging and heat pump adoption increases the total clean generation capacity required to maintain the same renewable percentage.

Live UK grid carbon intensity and fuel mix data is published continuously by National Grid ESO/NESO, allowing households and businesses to time high-consumption activities (EV charging, appliance use) to coincide with the greenest, cheapest periods on the grid — typically overnight when wind output is high and demand is low.
